Ronaldo’s plane crashes in Barcelona

Cristiano Ronaldo’s private jet reportedly crash landed at Barcelona airport on Monday night after the plane’s landing gear broke on impact with the runway.

Neither Ronaldo nor any of his family were on board when the Real Madrid star’s Gulfstream G200 aircraft was reported to have suffered a landing gear problem as it touched down at Barcelona’s El Prat airport.

The incident – in which no one was hurt -resulted in one of the airport’s runways being closed as emergency services dealt with the jet, which Ronaldo is believed to have bought for about £16million one year ago.

Ronaldo was with his Real Madrid teammates in Germany at the time of the crash ahead of Los Blancos’ Champions League match with Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday evening.

The Spain international is wanted by the Italian giants, but haven't been allowed to open negotiations with The Blues over a move for the midfielder AC Milan have made an approach for Cesc Fabregas but the Chelsea midfielder is not interested in moving to Serie A, Goal understands. Vincenzo Montella is a fan of the Spain international, who has not started any of the Blues' Premier League games thus far this season, but sources have confirmed that Fabregas is reluctant to leave Stamford Bridge and will subsequently remain at the club until at least January. Milan recently acquired Croatian midfielder Mario Pasalic from Chelsea on a season-long loan deal and then enquired about a move for Fabregas, who has also been linked with the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus.

From 'Sideshow Bob' to centre stage: David Luiz saves Chelsea from transfer disaster

The Blues seemed to spend much of the summer running around mad looking for a centre-back, but they found a returning hero mere hours before it was too late GOAL COMMENT David Luiz's late Deadline Day arrival at Stamford Bridge has turned transfer disaster into success for Chelsea. The Stamford Bridge outfit had looked short at the back, but the return of the Brazilian means that they now have a squad capable of fulfilling the aims of manager Antonio Conte. They made two major signings shortly before the window shut, capturing Luiz from Paris Saint-Germain for £32 million and adding Marcos Alonso from Fiorentina for £23m. Michy Batshuayi, N'Golo Kante and Eduardo had already been brought into west London, but the truth is that the Chelsea board suffered frustration time and again as their bids for defenders were repeatedly rejected. Moreover, a host of their main targets, including midfielder Radja Nainggolan and striker Alvaro Morata, slipped away from them. Chelsea's situation verged on crisis and fans began to aim their frustration at technical director Michael Emenalo, who habitually takes the brunt of transfer-related criticism. Conte has had only four senior defenders fit for his opening games and publically predicted a lack of signings could lead to failure. His skin was saved with the arrival of the Brazil international, offering some balance to the Italian, who is acutely aware that there will be as many as seven clubs battling for four Champions League spots at the end of the season. Once nicknamed 'Sideshow Bob' for his unique mop of hair, Chelsea fans are no longer mocking their most important signing of the summer. Owner Roman Abramovich was forced to shell out over £120m in a bid to support his new manager, whose minimum target is to secure a top-four finish. The Russian billionaire has funded a transfer campaign more lavish than any in the Premier League - the two Manchester clubs aside. N'Golo Kante's signing from Leicester City was the only deal to obviously represent great value for money in a transfer market Conte repeatedly called "crazy". Chelsea had to beat a host of the biggest clubs from around Europe to sign the 25-year-old Paris-born player, and already he has shown why. The France international midfielder stands out as Chelsea's best signing and has instantly made a huge impact at Stamford Bridge. Indeed, last season he should have beaten his former Leicester team-mate Riyad Mahrez to the PFA Player of the Year Award. Meanwhile, Michy Batshuayi has also started well after arriving from Marseille, scoring a crucial goal in the recent win over Watford, but Chelsea's other new boys have yet to feature. Alonso and Luiz are not bargains - you might even argue that they are panic buys - but they are of the required standard to achieve Conte's short-term aims. Chelsea's £60m Deadline Day splurge banishes their hangover from last season's abysmal transfer window, in which they signed flops like Baba Rahman, Papy Djilobodji, Michael Hector and Radamel Falcao. Now the only way is up after a disappointing 10th-placed finish last term. Now the board and Conte can relax now after navigating a transfer market that has been long and painfully drawn out - but, more crucially, a success.

Chelsea closing in on Inter's Brozovic

There are still some details for the Stamford Bridge side to iron out, but it seems that they are perhaps only hours away from completing their fourth signing of the summer GOALEXCLUSIVE Chelsea have had a €25 million offer accepted by Inter for Marcelo Brozovic but have yet to agree personal terms with the player, Goal understands. Sources close to Inter and the player have told Goal that it is "extremely likely" that an agreement between the player and Chelsea will be resolved before the transfer window closes on August 31, with talks ongoing. Brozovic wants a substantial pay rise as part of the deal to move to London and has made his financial demands clear to both Inter and Chelsea. The Premier League side will not offer any players in part exchange for the 23-year-old. Cesc Fabregas, whose long-term future at Stamford Bridge is in doubt, had been linked with a potential move to San Siro. Meanwhile, the Serie A side must raise funds after the recent moves for Gabriel Barbosa and Joao Mario put them at risk of breaching Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules. The Croatia international is a versatile midfielder, who featured in 32 games for his club last season and played for his country in Euro 2016.

Soler: Barcelona had an agreement to sign Pogba

The Barca chief claims they had a priority agreement with the Italian champions for France international before balking at the fee paid by Manchester United Barcelona sporting director Albert Soler has claimed the club had an agreement in place to sign Paul Pogba after the 2014-15 season. Pogba became the world's most expensive footballer when he rejoined Manchester United from Juventus for a fee of £89million. Speaking at a news conference to mark the end of the transfer window, Soler said Barcelona were in position to sign the France international a year ago but did not feel compelled to complete the deal, before balking at the price this time around. "Last year we reached an agreement with Juventus: if they wanted to sell Pogba we would have a priority," he said. "That was the commitment that we had. Juve did not want to sell the player and we didn't have the need to sign him. "Barcelona has always had a great relationship with Juventus. If we would have wanted to do the deal, nobody could advance us. "We signed six players with €120million. If one club can pay €120m for one player [it] will be very difficult to sign great players." Among the players acquired during a productive transfer window for the LaLiga champions was Paco Alcacer, ending a lengthy search for forward cover. The presence of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez appeared prohibitive for a number of reported Barca targets but technical secretary Robert Fernandez is delighted to have Alcacer on board and believes the 23-year-old Spain international is relishing the challenge. "I think that we have done a very good job with this transaction," he said. "We've got a very good player who we think is going to help us a lot "He has the best in front of him, that's for certain. He has to learn from the best – Luis Suarez – and I've told him that. "I've told all the players who have arrived what is required and how it will be difficult to play. It's a beautiful challenge.

OFFICIAL: Balotelli leaves Liverpool for Nice on permanent deal

The Italian forward's nightmarish spell with the Merseysiders is finally over after discussions on deadline day led to a move to Ligue 1 on a permanent deal Liverpool and Mario Balotelli have finally ended their malfunctioning association, with the striker signing for Nice on a free transfer. The 26-year-old was only due to be out of contract next summer, but the Reds pushed to get him off the books completely 737 days after taking a £16 million gamble on the Italian. The Ligue 1 side had originally slated a season-long loan for Balotelli, but negotiations continued well into deadline day for a more permanent solution, which was agreed after he passed a medical. Nice ousted FC Sion and Palermo to acquire the talented yet troubled forward. He will train for the first time with his new team-mates on Thursday morning, before being officially unveiled on Friday. Club president Jean-Pierre Rivere, the driving force behind the deal, said: “We are very pleased to welcome Mario. “We hope that Nice, in a family atmosphere, will help him rediscover his joy for the game. “We both know that nothing will be easy, but with the desire and support of all our fans, we’ll help him to flourish and bring his talent to the service of the team.” Negotiations over a transfer had not been straightforward since Balotelli travelled to the south-east coast of France for talks last week.

Elections may not hold in 2019- Ex-NHRC Chair, Odinkalu

Former Chairman, National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, Chidi Odinkalu, yesterday, expressed pessimism that elections may not hold in 2019, considering the level of preparation for the poll. Chairman NHRC, Prof. Chidi OdinkaluChairman NHRC, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu Odinkalu, who was speaking in Abuja at a town hall meeting and presentation of the findings of a post- 2015 elections research conducted by ActionAid Nigeria, said going ahead without proper preparation may result in crisis and deaths. Although he acknowledged that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recorded some gains in 2015 elections, Mr. Odinkalu said 2019 may be different. Odinkalu said: “Today, the executive has gone into lax mode; judiciary has become lawless; National Assembly is lacking in credibility; INEC is troubled; politicians have gone unruly. Government says it has no money to run the economy. Every element that made 2015 is currently missing. “There is absolutely no reason why the executive should allow the number of vacancies we have in INEC to be. By next month, INEC will have 28 vacancies among RECs (Resident Electoral Commissioners) and seven commissioners. The Executive is carrying on as if this normal. It isn’t. “Citizens are carrying on like: ‘We will tweet it on social media’. We should do more than that, because our country is at stake. The way we are carrying on, 2015 is history; 2019 may not happen, if we don’t reset. We‘ve got to take our country very seriously. There will be no elections in 2019. “I’m sorry to sound alarmist. But, continuing the way we are going, we will not be able to have elections in 2019. If it happens, there would be too many broken heads and dead people.” Lamenting the role of the judiciary, the lawyer, frowned at the corruption in the profession, particularly on recent rulings on electoral cases in the country. His words: “The judiciary has gone rogue and destroyed everything that was supposed to guarantee fairness in the 2015 elections. “Judges are speaking from too many sides of their mouth. There are no underlying principles. Judges come out with decisions they know are manifestly bought, and the profession is saying nothing. Citizens are behaving like it is normal for 20 judges to come out with 20 different orders on the same subject matter from different parts of the country. “The jurisprudence on the PVC is irresponsible. When a country appropriates for a measure, and has it backed by law and voted for by the citizens, the judiciary cannot outlaw it the way the judiciary dealt with the PVC (permanent voters card). The judiciary reacted to the PVC in a way that effectively licensed electoral violence.” Read more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/09/elections-may-not-hold-2019-ex-nhrc-chair-odinkalu/
